Hey folks. So in line with the 5th anniversary, I'm gonna try and give the site a fresh new look. Now here's the thing; the shoutbox. Aesthetically speaking, it does kind of ruin most views. It also usually doesn't get too much use, but that has been changing lately.
So instead of just making the call myself, I want to take in community feedback. I've come up with two choices that can yield what I perceive as the best outcomes given the situation:
Option 1: Get rid of the shoutbox, use discord, skype, and make a general chatting thread in off-topic
Option 2: Struggle to keep the shoutbox, maybe move it to the bottom of the page or something, and just try to make it work. Would require more time as I am not a coder.
So take a moment to vote in the poll, and feel free to voice any concerns or thoughts here. If you know HTML and want to help, thats also more than welcome.

Think I'll have to go to option 1 as well even though I don't use any of the mentioned above programs. Coming to the site and seeing days without a single message on the shoutbox can be a little depressing. :(

Well this is just about unanimous. I'd like to hear from the people who want it to stay though, I wanna know why you want it to stay.

See, in the academic world, if you make a poll, asking for people's opinions, you need to do your best not to have suggestive questions, do your best to let the subject decide what the subject wants. Of course, if one needs to try to be neutral in one's phrasing of questions to not influence the results, one can influence the results by not being neutral.
Let's be fair here. You're not really asking for people's opinions on the matter, you just want to be strengthened in the idea that the shoutbox needs to go... Now, no problem with that, go ahead, but... come on... whoever chooses for option 2 kind of sounds like a dick...
Anyway, I'm pretty much neutral (and the app doesn't allow me to vote anyway) as I mostly visit the forum via the app, which also doesn't allow access to the shoutbox. I kind of like the shoutbox, as it allows for a site-wide tool of communication, visible for everyone visiting the website regardless of whether they're going to check their own art thread, news for valkyrie drive, or NW cards. It also allows people to send links to their own threads that they want to draw some attention to, and I don't think this function has been abused so far (in the sense that the shoutbox has become a self-promotional box). I guess it also gives that little bit more of a community feeling that you don't get unless you're, indeed, in the skype or discord groups. But well, no need to get sentimental here over a feature that I didn't use all too much anyway.
IF there's going to be a general chat thread replacing this, maybe make it neatly visible on the front page or something? I know there is a random chat thread on the forum and last I checked it was kind of dead...

I don't really mind either way. Still, I voted for option 2 since I don't really think we should rush. As Poog said, it might be able to work if the shoutbox gets some editing. If it's proven to be too much of a struggle, then I'm fine with getting rid of it !!!!

Now, no problem with that, go ahead, but... come on... whoever chooses for option 2 kind of sounds like a dick... See, the thing is, if thats what I wanted, I wouldn't make a poll. I'm the kind of man who'd just do it. I listed the reasoning behind both without bias. I thought of more pros for option 1, and could not think of as many for option 2. But I still left the option instead of just going for it because while option 1 may have more uses for the site from a technical standpoint, the allure and use of a chatroom-esque feature is a big thing for some people. Its not about wanting reassurance or to be strengthened. Its about trying to be fair and do what the community wants too. There's nothing really wrong with choosing option 2, I don't see how anyone is a dick for choosing it.

Option 2: [1] Struggle to keep the shoutbox, maybe move it to the bottom of the page [2a] or something, and just [2b] try to make it work. Would require [3] more time as I am not a coder. I thouht I'd make bold the non-neutral aspects of it... Choosing option 2 is asking for the owners of the site to 1. go through a struggle, 2. with uncertainties that still need to be cleared up (but may not be cleared up at all), and 3. requires more time. If you truly wanted opinions rather than upholding an idea of being fair and listening to the community, you could've just said: shoutbox, keep it or lose it? Then put in your own vote saying aesthetically you prefer it without. I don't know, I'm probably making a bigger deal out of this than necessary, but I just had to laugh when I saw how the options were phrased, but maybe I'm being overly critical. Edit: huh, seems I can't see the bold parts, so I'll number them in case I'm not alone.
