So I was thinking about some things what SK series would explore, and something what came to me is that how many of the girls' backstories involve their family. It is sort of interesting to think about.
- In some adaptions, Asuka being the granddaughter of Hanzo (and I suppose Sayuri) is something what weights her in sense of how is she going to live up to her grandfather's legacy as a shinobi. Especially since her father wasn't a shinobi.
- Ikaruga's relation with her adoptive brother Murasame is a fairly large part of her character. She has hard time talking about her true heritage with others and is also weighted down by guilt. It is really when Murasame tries to patch things up when she can have a clear mind.
- Katsuragi's serious side and her desire to become the strongest shinobi sterns from her desire to clean up her parent's name after they were branded as renegades. Heck, the reasoning for it had to do with family, as they couldn't separate a family due of they themselves being parents.
- Yagyuu was devastated by the death of her sister, and is clingy forwards Hibari due of her reminding of her sister.
- Hibari was pressured to become a shinobi by her family due of being the one to receive Kagan of her generation. At least in her head. She thinks that she robbed the Kagan from her more skilful brothers and sisters and doesn't understand why everyone was so supportive of her in her training.
- Homura almost killing Komichi snowballed into her family disowning her, with the only thing she has to remind herself of her family is Engetsuka. Though it does show how harsh even good shinobi can be when you can be disowned by your parents for not being able to become one.
- Yomi's parents cared for their daughter and worked hard so that she could at least get a decent life, even if it lead to them dying due of malnutrition. Didn't help Yomi's case against the rich.
- Hikage is interesting since due of her being an orphan as far as she can recall, she has no family problems. Which itself raises questions on why Hikage is like she is and why is she an orphan.
- Mirai's parents are not really a part of her character, but it is interesting to note that they were good shinobi, but Mirai became an evil one due of her own goals.
- Haruka's father was hardly ever home and her mother treated her like a doll, which almost drove her insane. Ironically Rin taught her the art of puppetry so that she can get back at them and her interaction with Hibari originally can be seen as her emulating her mother.
- All of the Gessen Girls' parents are dead. Heck, Kurokage's parents died due of evil shinobi, which is the main reason for his behaviour. However, Kurokage wanted to eventually raise his adopted children as a parent instead of trying to reflect his opinions onto them. Other notable examples are Yozakura, who had a large family of siblings until both parents died and wants to reunite the family together and Murakumo, who was adopted a second time which she didn't enjoy.
- Miyabi loves both of her parents. She was motivated to become strong and slay the yoma after her mother was killed by one and followed Dougen due of her father being the principal of Hebijo Academy and not wanting him to get fired.
- Imu and Murasaki sort of bounce off one another. On Imu's side, she is jealous for her sister for being the one to get Root of Calamity where a Murasaki blames herself for upstaging her sister even if she herself never wanting to become a shinobi. Both of them do want to fix their relationship, though.
- While Ryoubi's and Ryouna's parents aren't important aside that they are dead, it was their big sister's death what really shook them, causing them to want revenge to the one who killed her. Ryoubi's relation with Ryouki is also rather important.
- Naraku is bit different as her deal is less "family" and more "tribe", as she spend most of her life up to this point fulfilling her tribe's goal. She eventually is faced with dilemma of doing what her tribe wants versus doing something to her only friend in the world.
So there you have it. I haven't included any of the New Wave girls since I am not familiar with them, and some things might be bit overblown, but the point is that family is in one way or another important to these girls.
Amusing Note: One of Daidouji's idle quotes in the menu has her commenting how her parents are asking about marriage.
