I can definitely understand why Switch owners were upset at the presentation, and I really have no points to defend that decision. I guess I can see the logic behind it, even if it doesn't justify it: Takaki has shown great interest with the Switch's HD Rumble feature, and Shinobi Refle and Peach Ball are the result of that interest. He wanted to make those games because he was interested in the technology, not because it's something the fans asked for. You could approach these games as tech demos more than full-fledged games, really. I just hope that they're being sold as such; from what we've seen, Shinobi Refle better not be any more than $20, maybe $30 if there's a bunch of features we're unaware of. Peach Ball... man, even if they really go all out with that "feeling breasts" gimmick, it's still a pinball game. I'm tempted to say it should be free, but I know that ain't happening, so $10 I think should be the maximum range for it. If any of these two games end up selling at full price, nobody is going to buy them.
As for Burst Re:Newal and 7even, though, I'm very excited about those! But there is something that puzzles me... I'm imagining that Re:Newal is being released before 7even so that newcomers and PlayStation-only fans can catch up with the story, but where does that leave Deep Crimson? Is its story not going to be crucial to understanding 7even? I woulnd't think so, since Kagura is most likely going to be an important character in that game, and Deep Crimson tells you everything you need to know about her and Naraku. In fact, if you only have the PlayStation exclusive Senrans and have never touched Deep Crimson, then you'd be very confused as to who Kagura is and what's her deal. What I'm getting at is: a considerable number of people might go into 7even while having no idea of Deep Crimson's plot, which is an issue. So I'm guessing one of several things might happen.
- Somewhere down the line, Deep Crimson gets the same treatment as Burst Re:Newal.
- Burst Re:Newal has some of Deep Crimson in it. After all, they said that game is only 30% complete, so who knows what they'll add.
- 7even will give you a summary of Deep Crimson's story a la Yakuza.
- 7even will start out with Deep Crimson (just like how Deep Crimson starts at the end of Burst) before moving into the new stuff.
It's too early to tell as we still have very little information on 7even, but I guess that's what makes speculating fun.
And as for New Link, I'm intrigued by it. Though, even if it comes to the West, my current phone would explode trying to run it, and I'm not someone who likes dishing out big money for super phones - if it does what it needs to do (calls, texts, and basic internet browsing), I'm happy. The idea of a turn based RPG for Senran Kagura is alluring, since I do like my Xenosagas and my Arc Rise Fantasias and what have you. But with a card system as well, I expect it to be very restrictive if you're not willing to dish out some cash or grind for days on end. What I do really like, though, is those three new girls that you see at the end of the opening. According to this article, Fubuki, Gekko, and Senko are villains - not rivals or another team of evil shinobi, no, villains. That is exactly what Senran Kagura needs, more villains. I want these girls to be out for blood, to be unfazed by the "power of friendship", to have a goal that opposes that of the good girls and is something that they cannot be convinced out of. Dogen, as annoying as he can be with how much he revives, is the only real villain this franchise has seen so far (not counting the yoma, they're more like monsters). He ain't enough, so I'm glad there's new people to oppose us. Furthermore, maybe they'll be villains in 7even and they're putting them in New Link as a sneak preview of what they can do? And now that I think about it, I'd love to see an alternate chapter in 7even where you play as those three and beat all the good guys. I've always been fascinated by the idea of playing as the villain, and it's not like this franchise is a stranger to that concept.
Whatever, I'm rambling now. I was blown away by how many announcements they made, but it seems like this is something they've been working on behind the scenes for a long time now, otherwise they wouldn't have so many games ready in such a short span of time. I do sincerely hope that Takaki considers bringing Burst Re:Newal and 7even to the Switch in the future. If these are games they've been working on for years, then it makes sense that they haven't been announced for Switch because they didn't have the console when they started development. But as a saving grace, I think we can all rest assured that those two games will also be coming to Steam once they hit the West. The only problem with that is that they will be as hardware-demanding as Estival Versus (or more), which isn't something a potato can run. Even with good optimization, I fear many will have to upgrade their PC's if they ever hope on playing Burst Re:Newal or 7even.
