Part 2 of my daily character breakdown goes over Ikaruga and how she works in the first game. Some things to note are that the enemies are easier and there is no hit stun right away for your character so right there that makes everyone seems so much stronger then there Burst counter part. also leveling is slower and you do not get some moves until later making curtain combos and movment not avalabale to at least level 35.
Ikaruga in potrait of young girls plays like a slower more technical Asuka. What I mean by that is when on the ground the frame rate can dip at times breaking up your momentum and maybe even making you miss that re launcher while in the air you are givin the freedom and control of Asuka but without the speed.
Yin mode/ Non turn over level 35 and up
Ikaruga in this form is pretty staright forward YYY is you core ground combo XXX is you core high launcher. I little change that I notice is that alot of the basic core combo's YYY in bust are now high lunchers and they were all low to the ground launchers in the original game but thats besides the point I will come back to the importance of this later. Unlike Bust you don't start out with all your movment or an attack dash so once you level up and unlock these abilities new ways of looking at IKagura open up. She is very much a rhythm based character and any small thin can throw you off. I talked about her X>A>X>A etc moves. in the original game more so then Bust this can be controlled in a rhythem to create new attacks or new properties on exsisting attacks depending on when you do it. Ikaruga has a sword and a Sword holder now you can hit them with the holder and not the sword or let the attack go futher and hit them with the sword and send them into the air. These attacks while still in Burst do not carry the same properties as they can not be done in the air and enemies reaction is diffrent in that game. But for this alone you can see she is more complex and I did not even get in to her air infinite or her air manual combos something that was removed from burst. Even what I touched on earlier about the height in which she launches the enemy from her core combo plays a big roll in trying to build bigger combos and keeping enemies closer to the grourd while using your multi air attacks.
Yin mode/ Turn over form
In this form she can use her Ninpou's and while strong they both leave you in a bad position and give not follow up and can not be used in combo's at all. her added moves are some what the same as burst so she has got the least changes to her core moves then alot of character just the speed of moves are faster in this game then burst and maybe the push back is a less for ground moves but more for air moves. In this form you won't be using her Ninpou much and will be attacking and getting around quickly with her jump Y>A>Y>A>Y>A etc or you can swap out Y for X and use her air dash and ground dash.
Senran mode/ secret unlock art
This mode is diffrent from bust as there is no hit stun to worry about so there is no major game play changes just new options that open up like the ability to infinite air rave combo's as well as giving you a longer dash range and movment on your attacks making controlling things like manual combos much harder. Other then that and a few other new moved added she is not realy that diffrent.
Yang mode/ Bikini form
In this form unlike in Burst you get a pretty huge speed boost as well as the fact that there is no hit stun to slow you done so thin of it as UMVC3 Xfactor where now all you combos all your moves and everything has to be change with the speed change or you will be dropping stuff left and right. In this mode its really fun because the added speed lets you do things you originaly could not. All your ground attacks in this mode is reduced to hack and slash button mashing and enemies die so fast that there is really no way to explore the ground game, and of course if all else fails you have unlimited and pretty quick limit breaks that act as your attack and dodge, these also were removed from this form in burst while adding tuffer enemies.
Across the board Ikaruga does not change much and the game does not require more from you then Burst but her potential in her moveset is great and can be pushed to the limits more then it can in burst because of the restrictions not put on her play style.
