lets see, well from what I seen/read:
5. Ranma 1/2 (a lot of gender bender stories were inspired by it. though like Kampfer, I dont like its conclusion. Great comedy and characters, though sometimes Ranma gets on my nerves and I dislike how the gender ability is labeled as a curse instead of having a positive viewpoint. For such a bold series, it still panders to strict conservative mindsets to some degree. At least it's better than Kampfer, though I think they could have done a lot more with it. and I feel the open ended conclusion should have been setup to different possible pairings instead of the 'obvious' tropey pairing that conservatives would push for. )
4. Circle Zero Otherworldly Hero Business (discontinued, but fascinating isekai, gender bender and reincarnation hybrid in full color. its too bad they seemed to drop it. would be interesting what sort of character development it would of had. its very different from the usual stories. and while some would relate it to Tanya the evil, Circle Zero OHB has a more mature tone and intellectual side and not so focused on violence. It's really interesting how this creative story came from South Korea, a place that is even more conservative compared to Japan. while the protagonist is psychologically hateable, it is very interesting how they are in a circumstance that pressures them to do things that are beneficial to good people. Over time, one could imagine what sort of development and learnings they could have. while the manga is incomplete, the existing parts still hold valuable components. one could even say where it ends leaves an open ended future that is only limited by the viewer's imagination, so that's why I place it slightly above Ranma 1/2, because the MC's potential development is unknown, potentially redeemable, and totally possible to develop into a much better soul. )
3. Eiyuu no Musume Toshite Umarekawatta Eiyuu wa Futatabi Eiyuu o Mezasu. (ongoing) another reincarnation tale, though with magic and medieval themes. a cool thing about this one is that it explores the protagonist's new life from birth even right into childhood. so much detail.
2.Saikyou no Kurokishi (male) Sentou Maid (female) ni Tenshoku shimashita (ongoing ) (similiar to #3, but the protagonist is seemingly better. has a tragic past but a cheerful present and very charismatic and strong and surrounded by interesting characters too.)
1. Sekainohate De Aimashou (the greatest character development, plot elements, scenario, romance, and greatest conclusion I seen in a gender bender manga/story to date. this is like the one story that defies the typical tropes that usual gender bender plots sink down to. Its hard to talk more about it than spoiling it. while the protagonist was not as likeable compared to Maria in Sentou Maid, Sekainohate de Aimashou really makes even certain other hateable character redeemable. well not saying the MC is hateable, but just inconsiderate among other things, though like I said, this story's character development really is something some story seekers been looking for, and fed up with the tropey conservative nonsense other stories were doing. its really insane this manga didnt get its own anime. though yea I admit its artstyle/character designs are somewhat weak, especially the MC design in particular. yea the one flaw of it is that the Ryouma's face is generally the same before and after the sex change, so it is somewhat jarring, but considering the characters treat the MC as female after the sex change, then technically, the MC's face in full detail instead of simplified anime, would be genuine female looking despite the artist not really putting detail to differentiate old and new Ryouma better. but its really not that hard to look beyond that. like, even Ranma's face looks practically the same, with just color differences and maybe some eyeshadow or lighter skin tone basically. male Ryost's way of conveying the internal struggle between the MC's male gender identity and new biological female identity. there's different ways to look at it, but honestly, the MC has a girly face before and after anyways, and with simple anime style art, it makes seeing the differences invisible. though anyways overall I recommend Sekainohate de Aimashou if people wanna see something different from the Ranma 1/2 or Kampfer direction. )
* X Change 3 (not a manga/anime, but is an anime game. that has a gender bender story and very different story routes the player can choose. just added it here for those seeking gender bender stories they could find very cool and interesting. being better than manga/anime that are limited to preset plot path and singular outcome, a game like X Change 3 really takes the concept up a couple of levels with interactive immersion and player control with multiple very different outcomes that cater to both sides of the spectrum of preferences).
