Official Yomi thread

Something about my Lady Beansprout has been on my mind for a while, now--and while it might be relevant for more senrans than just Yomi, everything I have to say revolves around her, so I figured it wouldn't warrant its own topic outside of this one.

(It's also a sort of crosspost from a comment I made on her Wiki page.)



I wonder if Yomi's parents weren't actually Scandinavian expatriates who (unfortunately) fell on brutally hard times.

Given the Norse/North European theme of her techniques, equipment, and attire, her appearance is describable as such--even as Viking-inspired. This site says the following about average Viking (commoner, not noble) height:

"The examination of skeletons from different localities in Scandinavia reveals that the average height of the Vikings was a little less than that of today: men were about 5 ft 7-3/4 in. tall and women 5 ft 2-1/2 in."

Today's Scandinavians, on the other hand (and to play devil's advocate), are taller: since according to this (apparently well-sourced; that's the only reason I'm referencing it) Wikipedia article, Norwegian women self-report an average of 5'5.5"; Swedish women, 5'5"; and Danish women, an average of 5'6.5". These are self-reported and averages, however, so variation is to be expected--and with that said, Yomi would come in at the lower end of such averages, at 5'3"; a height more like the aforementioned Vikings (but might be due to poor nutrition in her childhood).

One can argue 無国籍 (mukokuseki, "statelessness"--much of anime and manga exhibit such a style), especially when considering Haruka's appearance in general, and Homura's eyes (accounting for the Crimson Squad alone). (To be frank, I have to wonder about Haruka, as well--but she's beyond the scope of my thoughts.)

Except for Yomi's height (according to that article, Japanese women have an average height of 5'2"), and as I said elsewhere, the only thing that's Japanese about her at all is her spoken language; everything else is foreign--especially her largely Nordic phenotype.
