Overall though, Senran Kagura Burst is a far better game than I thought it would be and one of the better handheld beat-em-ups you can find. There’s tons of content, some great design, and some very solid gameplay. While the story does have some missed opportunities, there a few bright points in the narrative to keep it from being a waste. While I can’t recommend it to everyone, since I’m sure I’m not the only one who is going to be a little bothered by the battle damage scenes, I don’t think it’s fair to relegate it only to fans of the franchise. So I’m giving it a “Try it Out” rating.

Overall, the game is a relatively fun experience, but one that will actually require time and effort in order to unlock its full potential. Without that investment, the game play may seem entirely too repetitive -- so much so, that you'll end up tossing it aside and forgetting you had it. The game is packed with plenty of ecchi, so that's a plus depending on how you look at it, but in the end, it's safe to say the game isn't for everyone, and even for those of us who might usually enjoy the beat-em-up genre, Senran Kagura Burst fails to truly innovate.

So aside from some creeping "been there, done that" tedium, lack of an in-game store or lottery, extremely minor censorship and a good song that isn't a great song, there isn't really anything bad to say about Senran Kagura Burst. It's a huge game (two, actually) with lots to do at a budget price. It features tons of action, a story and characters outside Nintendo's usual family-friendliness and an updated take on a classic genre. I guess one could complain that the game is exclusively available on the eShop - a boxed copy would have been a nice choice - but other than that, this is as solid a brawler as you'll find on any handheld right now (including Dragon's Crown - gasp!). Obviously, it doesn't reach the dizzying heights of greatness achieved by big budget, tent pole titles like Pokemon, Super Mario 3D Land or Shin Megami Tensai IV, but what it does right on a smaller scale, it does really, really well. Don't hesitate on downloading this one unless your wife, mother or girlfriend plans on watching you play. You might get some stares from them.

All of this combines to deliver a fun, silly, and unapologetically sexy style of game that doesn't think twice about offending you with its over-the-top objectification of female characters.
You might (justifiably) feel awkward playing it out in public, but there's plenty in Senran Kagura Burst to keep you coming back for more once you're safe at home.

There's a huge amount of content to unlock including attacks, costumes, artwork, movies and more.
If you're not offended by anime girls with ridiculously bouncy watermelon breasts in various stages of undress, there's an enormous game packed with hours of shallow-but-enjoyable narrative, tons of retro-style beat-'em-up fun, and a few guilty pleasures along the way.

At the end of the day, whether or not you will enjoy Senran Kagura: Burst will ultimately come down to answering this question: do you pine to play a game where getting beat up means your character’s clothes become tattered, torn, or completely destroyed, revealing the half-naked body of an adolescent girl who just so happens to have absolutely titanic breasts? If you answered, “yes,” then Burst has a lot to offer: pulse-pounding combat, deep customization and a wealth of unlockables and content. If you answered, “no,” then all the best brawling mechanics in the world probably won’t make Senran‘s provocative, shinobi schoolgirl pill any easier to swallow. -
