TOKYO, Feb. 18, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCE) today announced that the PlayStation®4 (PS4™) computer entertainment system has cumulatively sold through more than 5.3 million units*1 around the world as of February 8, 2014 (JST), and is continuing to demonstrate strong growth and momentum.
"I am thrilled that so many customers around the globe have continued to select PS4 as the best place to play throughout and beyond the holiday season," said Andrew House, President and Group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. "We are delighted that according to the NPD Group's latest data, PS4 was January's top-selling console in the United States. The PS4 system's momentum just keeps growing stronger, and we are extremely grateful for the continued passion and support of PlayStation® fans. February 22 sees the launch of PS4 in Japan, and I'm looking forward to Japanese fans sharing the excitement of the deep social capabilities and entertainment experiences only possible on PS4."

For reference these are PS2 like numbers, and Japan launch in a couple weeks. Sony has almost turned it around from the losses of the PS3 era and made a system people have to have right now.

I gotta get a PS4 one of these days. Too bad I don't have an HD tv.

One day but not now. I'm glad it's doing well though.

So far the next-gen consoles are too expansive and don't have enough games for me to consider buying one. I might reconsider if Estival Versus is released on PS4 though

Those are solid numbers when you consider how few Japanese targeted games the system has.
This also means the PlayStation 4 has surpassed the Wii U in global sales. I had predicted it would happen by Fall, so well done to Sony and tough times for Nintendo.

They really can't support that system and hurt there ips with each release.

Not trying to debate but I must add that France's sales might actually hold the key to fixing Wii U's momentum, as pointed out by Iwata himself. I'm eager to know what it is but I'm sure they've found it out by now and are strapped by NDAs. As for the Xbox One, that console is pretty much DOA in Japan and not looking to catch up to the PS4 or Wii U anytime soon. According to this article, Microsoft has had their share of screw ups, as well. Xbox is only selling slightly better than Wii U, so that means it's facing problems too. Unless these two find a solution, expect this generation to be even more one-sided than the 6th. So whatever detailed in the editorial happened with them is theirs to easily turn around.

Well Xbox may not make it but it still will sell better then the wiiu with 3rd parties alone. If PS4 don't get Japanese dev support then no Japanese home console will sell Ps4 and wiiu will see worst sales but Ps4 always has the west Nintendo just gave the west up. Maybe the hybrid will be a better investment later on. If they merge the system they have a chance next time and can support there own.
