I decided to go into a little bit of my "her-story" with competitive and general gaming as a girl.
Puzzle & Braggin
Some of my most early memories of gaming is with puzzle games, I loved all types of puzzle games from arcade to handheld in practical Tetris. I use to love this game and play it all the time until my brother got hold of my system and started to play. Not only would he play longer then me but he would play better then me. When it was my turn again I was left with this impossible high score to beat. No matter how long I played or tried I could not beat his score. This was not much of a problem with games that did not have save state like arcade and early console games, but it turned in to a big problem once all games had them and any puzzle game I got or platformer he would leave his high score or beat the game before me. I could not beat them all and when I did and felt good he would leave a higher score. This eventually turned me off to the puzzle game genre for a long time and it did not help that any head to head puzzle games I would lose at as well.
My defeat at puzzle games drove me to co op games as now at this time puzzle games have vs mode and i'm losing left and right to kids younger then me. In co op games I gained alot of confidence back as well as value because now I'm important to the tream and I may have a talent or skill another member lacks. But soon most co op games were replaced with fighting and racing games and again it came back to head to head competition.
Player 2 (that's me )
Now with everthing being VS suddenly I have nothing to play at an arcade visit so I don't go as much, during this time my brother is buying every fighting game and sports game release and if the game said two players on the box player 2 was me. It really did not matter the game either it sports or fighting I was simple givin a controller with no instructions but this button does this and that is for this. For fighters it was not as bad because he at least told me how to do a fireball, hurricane kick and dragon punch...but with words only never showed me motions or any thing, this was worst in sports games because nothing carried over like the fighting game controls so that was the easiest then came driving, football (American) and basketball.
Why you say this was a problem and why not play something else? Well I did but the only way to play any new game at the time it had to be VS mode so if I wanted to try the game I had to play him or I could not play. When I did play alone he would just join in mostly on the racing games and fighting games. The situation would get worst when his friends would come over and we would pass the controller around and the only way to stay on was to win but I could not beat him so I focused on just beating his friends. This was good for me as they would get mad and eveyone would leave lol. Needless to say even though now I knew how to play the games and could beat others in VS games I still could not beat him.
Teacher and Student
Finally the day has come, I don't remember which Street fighter game it was but my brother actually talked to me while we were playing and gave me advice on what no to do and what to look for. He taught me how to understand things like zoning the right way and using other things for anti air besides DP all the time. Some of the idea's I knew I just not use them as easy or as effective as he did. Now I finally had the knowledge to go with the skills and used this as a base for other games such as racing (not mario kart) and even sports as well as FPS.
Up to this point my brother was still beating me at 2d fighters but he could not play 3d fighters at all and there was no one I had to play these games with so around this time I taught myself how to play tekken as well as others. This gave me the most confidence in that I can do it myself and play others in an arcade setting and win the majority of the time. At this point I was fully addicted to competitive gaming and even showed some girls how to play. I would jump back and fourth between fighters shooters, racing DDR almost everything just about.
Advance Strategy
One genre that I looked down on would become my greatest help strategy games or turn base strategy. I use to hate games like chess and others because I would always lose when I was younger but out of curiosity I picked up Advance wars 2 and I fell in love with the game and it helped me alot in terms of strategy and since it had different characters it was more close to a fighter so many things I was able totransfer over to that as well as shooting games I turns of how to secure an area and hold it down. These games helped me alot even helped me pick up puzzle games again. Now I had accumulated enough knowledge to break games down on my own and look at them from all sides player, dev, casual and competitive.
In closing I would like to say I never seen my self as a girl that wanted to be good at games I just wanted to simple beat people thing talk trash but you don't talk trash until you win and you don't win until you learn and I never gave that it because even if something is physical hard for you are execution may be to high remember there is always another way to win and that is play smarter not harder, this is something strategy games teach.
So that's my her-story.
And yes I was able to finally beat my brother in fighting racing and even madden. Lol but he never stud a chance in FPS.
