Atlus parent company, Index Corporation, has filed for civil rehabilitation proceedings, the Japanese equivalent to bankruptcy in the US, according to CNET Japan. The company owes owes ¥24.5 billion ($249 million) after several acquisitions went south.
The company did note that Atlus has been profitable and a success, following a press release. They are currently looking for a partner or sponsor for Atlus, so the game developer won't be affected.
Index Corporation posted a loss of ¥2.26 billion yen ($23 million) for its second fiscal quarter 2013. Siliconera is reporting that it left the company with ¥1.44 billion in debt that it has not been able to overcome.
-------------------
What does this mean?
It could mean Atlus going away or getting bought by another company (Namco-Bandai, Sony, Nintendo, etc.)
Or, it could mean Atlus IPs get auctioned off one by one to other companies as Index works to pay its debt.
I think someone will buy Atlus as this whole situation is not their fault and is profitable.

Some people on the net are going crazy, I can easily say being in japan with a japanese POV on this that Namco-Bandai buying them would be the best and anything else would be the worst as mostly everyone but namco is a bad position money wise and would make drastic changes to the teams if brought. At least with namco it just be another brand with the many other brands they control.

What Atlus needs to do now is take a big risk and turn the tables by releasing a considered risky but popular game, anyone got any ideas how they could do that?

Nintendo seems like a good candidate, they have billions in reserves and wont change them at all. Most of all Atlus franchises are on Nintendo systems too and they're doing a collaboration with each other. I'm sure if SMTxFE will be effected then Nintendo will want to take action. Nintendo said they're in the market to buy so maybe Atlus will get bought by Nintendo.

At least as a third party they could still be asked to make specific games.

But on a side note, there's no telling who could be after Atlus now, if a big company sees an opportunity to profit off of Atlus' IPs then the best we can do is sit and watch what happens. Any of the big 3 platform owners could buy them if they wanted to, it may not be how everyone thinks it'll turn out. We're only in a position where we can be left to speculate at this point.

If anyone but Namco or Gungho buy them expect problems as most japanese pubs are not well off on the money side. People seem to always forget if they do get brought someone still has to pay for the game and the marketing plus ad and production of the games overseas. So its not as simple as people make it seem when you see oh let MAQL buy them when they can't even release there games.

Atlus has always been able to fund and publish their games by themselves, so I don't think that would be a problem unless they start hemorrhaging money. But it's not like those are the only two companies are they? We still cant be sure who'll pick them up at this point.

They have done fine and SMT IV will do well for them. The issue is their parent company made other bad investments and committed fraud in regards to their financials. I think The question is more what will someone else do to Atlus.

I could see benefit for them, but Atlus may not represent a ROI Nintendo would deem desirable.

...but Atlus may not represent a ROI Nintendo would deem desirable. I'm pretty sure Atlus doesn't lose more money than they gain in profit, that would be weird to me coming from such a revered developer. Heck, given their popularity, it would be a smart move to swipe them up. It might even be for same reason Bayonetta 2 was able to exist.

Don't worry they'll become a subsidiary to some group as there is no way every group or company will leave a profitable company with assets. There just waiting for the price to assets to reduce the collateral on intial purchase.

I wouldn't want either Sony or Nintendo to buy Atlus. I don't want to see Sony platforms deprived of Persona titles, and nor would I want the main line SMT games taken off of Nintendo machines. (And I say this as someone more on the Sony side of the fence.)
So long at Atlus' new owners (should there be any) can secure the future of the company, and keep it operating on a multi-platform basis, that would work for me.
