Well they do have some cliches, but they're overlooked because of how they're used.

I completely agree. Also, drama and 'hard' topics can go a long way for a character characterization, however 'cliche' he may have started.

it alsi helps that kiriya was done well and does not baby them or lust after them. that is a huge change.

Yes; truly a paragon among men. There is few men in the SK cast but Kiriya is truly an example of nobility.
