Stop trying to hit all points in one go it makes it harder for you and now the other person feels they have to write as much or they lose.

Heated debates are all well and good, but adding in the occasional bout of unnecessary/unwarranted hostility, which I do feel there has been the off and on spike in recently, not so much.
We all are here for the same series that we all clearly have attachment to, after all. If that's how some of y'all want to roll, go for it, but conversely, much as I like the series, I've got enough stress in my life that I don't need to get more of it from a place that's supposed to be enjoyable - which is what debates should and can be too when they don't get to be like that.
So I guess I'm in the middle on that one.

Which is why if there's a sign of hostility in the debates, the mods will step in of course.

Adding in my honest half-cent (which is an actual rare coin in US currency) here; I always felt uneasy during these long debates. I tend to skip over them, yet worry over who's right or who's got better points. And usually these debates are on topics that I have little knowledge, experience, or interest in, so that. somehow, makes me more uneasy. It's really that decision on whether you should interfere that stresses for some reason.
But if something radical movements and fandoms have taught me, it's to stay on the sidelines and hope it unravels itself....which may or may not be the best course of action depending how you look at it.
Oh look! Wall of text.

As much as I enjoy a good debate I'm with you.
I tend to stay on the sidelines when one occurs mostly because the conversation will move quickly and I usually get left behind. Also putting yourself between two people rarely end well.
Also a wall of text won't have paragraphs.

I was hoping no one would catch that. Darn, triumphed again.

I've got a kinda odd position on arguments. I don't usually like to start them, and I don't think that anyone really does, it all comes down to two different opinions on one subject. Normally, arguments don't get too aggressive, (Though either side may attest to the other side 'attacking' them, which though somewhat true is something they signed up for in posting their opinion anyways, imo), but I agree, it's pretty silly to watch a friendly argument spiral into basically glorified name calling. However, I personally don't think that anything that bad has been going on here, believe me, I've seen far worse. The world is made up of arguing people, and we can't really just shut that out, we just need to kinda let it happen.
Also, I don't know if it's just me, I don't know how I'm going to sound saying this, but I hate seeing arguments get shut down by mods, even if I'm not directly related to it. It's like two people are talking and someone walks up and says "Shut up, nobody cares.". I agree that a mod should pick up on if something is getting way too heated, but even then, using force to stop a discussion on a public forum just sounds generally wrong to me. Again, I do think there are exceptions that will call for force, but again I haven't seen any arguments that are even close to nesearry to immediately stop. At least ask them to move to PMs or maybe move their argument to a different/new post.
Anyways, sorry for my weird view on things, hopefully I don't, heheheh, start an ARGUMENT or anything. (YOU GET IT? HAHAHA *insert humorous ironic action here.)

Basically, if other people are getting annoyed with the argument or it's getting out of hand with name calling or hostility surfacing, we'll step in and do something about it.
