it's about time a high quality immersive, beautifully Gust designed, and personalized magical girl RPG is created, with structure that simulates and generates a more personal and immersive japanese high school girl + magical girl lifestyle. And like Shin Megami Tensei, The Elder Scrolls, Fallout 3, Fire Emblem Fates, and Xenoblade X, the main character seems to be a silent protagonist, so the player can RP as the protagonist at a more immersive and unified level (or maybe like Fallout 4, where dialog choices are voiced with preset style of speech?) It definitely doesn't seem like the usual mainstream jrpg / Atelier rpg protagonist style.
Although there is no protagonist creation/edit features, the predesigned Hinako design looks very pretty and charismatic. I'm loving the design even more than Persona3Portable's female MC. and with Gust's amazing experience with Atelier rpgs, imagine what they can achieve with a deep and wholesome mahou shoujo / magical girl RPG. and Gust RPGs are massively epic in things to do even after the the core questline is completed
I think the previous genuine magical rpg I played was Sailor Moon rpg (translated) on SNES, though that was a rpg about a preexisting story fans already knew with preexisting personality/soul filling the protagonist role, with a orthodox rpg progression design. though Blue Reflection is something totally new and unexplored and looks to be at a player personal level. From what I read, Blue Reflection looks to be the first magical girl rpg where the player and the protagonist are one in mind besides body (which is open RPG at its core), and it's really the player's story and life as Hinako living in a world that is structured like a real life day to day experience, living as a high school girl that becomes a magical girl, living a dual life as a high school girl and a magical girl fighting otherworldly beings while defending her dimension and loved ones. The other two magical girls look very interesting too. it doesn't seem like there will be more than 3 Reflectors in the story, but since the player can become a magical girl, so can others, though they might save the expansion of Reflectors for a sequel. maybe I just like how Sailor Moon expanded from 1 to 5 members, and went even beyond that with the Outer Senshi and stuff, though Blue Reflection does have infinite potential, though its nice it focuses on a group of 3, so we can form stronger close relations with our Reflector sisters. though I think there can be both quantity of Reflectors and quality of relationships, bonds and interactions.
though I feel Blue Reflection has opportunity to be a more personal, emotional and amazing experience if the player and Hinako are one, and the player's mind is Hinako's mind, instead of a preset entity. Like in Atelier games for example, we play as ______ character, but they have their own mind, their own soul. We are the protagonist, but at the sametime, it's more of a guiding and spectating a protagonist thing instead of being totally them, unless we totally accept and absorb their personality as our own in that world, so that requires more RP tolerances and adaptation, however if the player totally is incompatible with the protagonist's mindset, and rejects the premade mindset, then, that game only be played as just some interactive story, not something more.
that's why silent protagonists is a great concept and pillar of a rpg foundation, because it leaves things more open for the player and protagonist to be one. one mind, one soul. Yes, this rpg doesn't allow to completely edit Hinako's design and backstory, but in a sense, it's actually natural for the player to have the premade name Hinako, since naturally being born as Hinako, the name would be given by the parents, and children naturally accept the name given to them, so RP wise, it makes sense for our name to be predetermined. As for interest in ballet, personally, we may have not had past interest in ballet, but as Hinako, we can, and in the past we must of had influences that generated an interested in ballet. The void that remains on what we been through since birth as Hinako, is part of the awesomeness of open protagonist identity.
Whatever backstory and experiences missing can be determined by the player, as for overall personality and mindset, the player can merge what they know about theirself as Hinako, and what they don't know/remember but fill in with their own imagination and RP adaptation. Further adaption can be achieved understanding the types of conversation choices there are, and overall how the game expresses our nature as Hinako, the player can totally develop a complete understanding of themselves as Hinako and the directions their mind can take based on the natural upbringing and path that leads to this point being in full control of ourself as Hinako Shirai.
there has yet to be full confirmation whether Hinako is silent protagonist, a shell that is filled with the player's mind/soul to unify the player with the protagonist as one whole and single identity, single entity, connecting the player to the world even more immersively, or if there's a premade soul like typical premade character driven rpgs. but from my research, my interpretation on the kind of RPG Blue Reflection is, seems to be more of the personal RPG type, and if that is so, that is going to make the experiences, decisions, relationships, and lifestyle even more impactful, emotional and personal. You know these developers should also advance in providing first person option, there's more amazing ways to connect player to their identity as the protagonist, in first person, being able to see your body as we can naturally see our body in first person, along with natural reflections (like mirrors) acknowledging your identity in the world, and overall connection with the world as one whole, can be more amazing instead of usual "spectator perspecitve controlling an avatar" style. though even in 3rd person, it's possible to imagine and have a mindset that you are there, though its so much easier with proper first person perspective to it.
Though yes, I understand that with limitations to first person modeling and animation and fully body awareness tech, 3rd person can express how our body moves, adjusts and flows, more than 1st person with the current conventional methods developers apply to first person expression in their gameplay. but still providing first person option at all, would be a start. Xenoblade X includes it (even though it is a hack attempt, it still is actual FPV) , it shouldn't take VR to have that feature, though I understand if like for example, if their level designs might have areas with no skyboxes, then first person might be complicated to do right. there's advantages to both 1st person and 3rd person. with today's tech, only 3rd person expresses our full body movement and gestures, that 1st person tech has yet to accurately express in that perspective. developers have yet to advance in 1st person full body awareness and natural link in first person (so doesn't feel like a camera). it doesn't require VR to do first person realistically and naturally right. So I'm not expecting Blue Reflection to feature something like that since their priority with the art and protagonist presentation is to express from 3rd person perspective, but still, they could really raise the standards and immersion at greater levels going further with it.
though I appreciate the breakthroughs they are achieving with this new RPG, and RP experts among us can still become immersed with it.
