So, there's a new Double Dragon coming out at the end of the month on PS4 and Steam, and it's being made in the style of the NES ports from the '80s. In fact, it's pretty much a continuation of the old games in the form of a new numbered title, Double Dragon IV.
Honestly, I think it looks amazing. If you look at how well Mega Man 9 and 10 did, it makes sense for them to go for the same style as the older games from way back when. Sure, it's not really a big spectacle or anything, but it doesn't need to be. It's freakin' Double Dragon. The concept is so simple, so they don't really need to mess with it.

I dont care about the stupid ignorant graphics whore idiot mainstream industry that COMPLETELY disrespected and underrated Double Dragon IV to the fullest pea brain perspective they are plagued with.
it is a masterpiece, surpasses its predecessors and raises the standards for replay value, diversity, and antagonist that ACTUALLY have some degree of character development and learn from their mistakes. meanwhile the stupid sexist knuckle heads criticize everything about it, even when Double Dragon was never known for deep storytelling, its ending and message was much more human and timeless than any other Double Dragon plot.
there has yet to be a developer to invent a modern art style and art direction that matches the series, and I'm glad they went for a more Double Dragon II art direction. ASW artists just dont mix with Double Dragon's grittyness, and people hated Neon's style, as well as others. and ASW was criticized for Hard Corps Uprising art. so why not stick with what the series is more identifiable with in terms of visuals?
yes a new Double Dragon with next gen graphics would be great, but theres no qualified developer to do it right. but even retro style, Double Dragon IV achieves a lot of breakthroughs within its own series, that deserves more respect. Sure the enemies can be cheap, but so was the original arcade game. and the challenge is offset by the Options button cycling of continuing on the mission you left off, so anyone can beat the story if they want to take the easy path, and there's still hardcore challenge for those that dont want to resort to the stage select.
the fact all the enemies are playable, with its outstanding selection that would make even Super Street Fighter II jealous, that in itself to me adds a whole extra layer of timeless values to the game, and they are playable in story mode besides the epic hardcore tower mode and VS.
and both tower mode and story mode support co op. tons of possible team combinations too, and with the safe zones on the top of bottom, it's even possible for 1 player to duo through the story with 2 characters.
some of us Double Dragon fans waited 30 years for a Double Dragon like this, and didn't expect they would actually make it. the imbeciles that don't appreciate it miss out, this game is worthy of the series anniversary and its such a great Double Dragon game, it's easy to pick up and play whenever and still have a great time
the only criticism I would have for it, is that its a shame even with about 18 playable characters, they didn't make Marian playable, however, Ayumi, both Lindas, Casey and Shannon make up for it.

I enjoyed this game but I felt the ending was weak.
I love that I can play as Abobo. My favorite DD boss.
Marian wouldn't be playable anyway unless they make new sprites for her that if she could fight in the first place.

they made Ayumi and other newcomers from scratch, and Neon did give Marian sprites to punch that antagonist in a cutscene.
the ending for Double Dragon IV was emotional and very human. the most human the series ever was. the others are just basically beat the antagonists, and those other games just has rotten antagonists, but Double Dragon IV's antagonist are actually more realistic and have justified way of thinking in order to survive and be at the top of the food chain.
and at the sametime, upon defeat, they are actually humbled. even Shannon showed the path they walk would lead to their own self destruction, but Shannon followed her sister's lead because of course she couldn't survive on her own and she loved her sister. but also, the Lee twins show that their fighting style isn't for killing, and this game is the ONE TIME, they actually reason and successfully convince the antagonists to become good and cleanse themselves from their desensitized mindset.
so this is the one time, that Double Dragon antagonist can be cared about, and the Lee twins also are not just avengers and crushers of evil, this 30th anniversary game, shows that beyond their fighting skills and strength, they can turn evil to good.
so you see, even with the cutscene being simple, it has timeless depth to the message it gets across. Casey and Shannon are the first two Double Dragon villains that actually have a tragic history that influenced their desperation to become stronger and stand on top of everything. And now defeated by those that do not have ambitious of conquest nor fueled by hatred, they learn deeper values and understand that the Lee twins are not their enemy at all and they have the chance to become greater people that can be good and strong.
