Following the Switch conference last month, we learned that the Tales series would appear on the system in some form, but have received no further information sense. Here, I want to discuss just what exactly this mystery Tales game might be, and what Namco could do for the series on Nintendo consoles and beyond going forward.
First things first, one thing I am hoping for for this mystery Tales game on the Switch is that it is a brand new game and not a late port of Berseria, simply because I do not think a port now is a good idea. The majority of fans who are interested in the game likely have already played the game on PS4 or Steam, and quite frankly, late ports tend to not work out very well. (Look at the Wii U, if you don't believe me.) I also believe that if they went the late-port route for Tales on the Switch, then that could potentially kill the series on Nintendo consoles for good. So, I am really hopeful that this is not a port of any kind.
Now, here comes the hard part. If it is in fact, an all-new game, like I hope it is, then will it be exclusive? If you ask me, I don't think it needs to be exclusive. Would I like for it to be exclusive? Well, sorta-kinda-not-really. On one fact, I do think that Namco should absolutely test the waters for this series on not only the Switch, but also future Nintendo consoles, but at the same time, I wouldn't really be happy feeling like those of us that will be playing on the Switch are getting this special Tales game that's just for us while the PS4 and Steam are both getting the real meat of the series. So, I would like for them to take a chance releasing a Tales game multiplat on both PS4 and Switch. I'm not going to be too heartbroken if they don't decide to go that route, but at the same time, it would just be really nice if they did.
I hope this Tales on Switch business means they're considering releasing on multiple platforms, because that would be a perfect way to further expand the series' audience across even more platforms. Ideally, a good route to go would be PS4/Switch in Japan, and then the Western release would add ports on both Steam and Xbox One, just to ensure the biggest audience possible across all major platforms. I don't know if they will go this route, and frankly, I would be very surprised if they did, but I really can't help but think that Tales being on Switch gives a pretty good opportunity for this, and I really hope they take it.
Anyway, what do you guys think of this? Do you think this should be a brand-new game? Do you think it should be multiplat? Do you think it should be exclusive? What are your thoughts? Because I am very curious to know.
