Holy shit so this poll is a new example how ******* up and sexist and uncaring this industry really is. so many with complacent slave mentality are not helping matters. over 6000 voted they don't care. sickening. www.gamefaqs.com/poll/6934-does-the-gender-of-the-player-character-in-a-game-matter-tothat, times the majority of the industry demographics being male, results in oversaturation of male glorification. then you have the ones, including females, that don't care what their character is, which worsens the problem and lack of female representation in games and lack of female leads, even as an option. over 5000 voted they don't mind play as either sex, which in a way is not a good sign because if they don't care, then that means by default, companies would see that with the attitude of "well we might as well not add female player characters in our game at all since a lot of people don't mind either way. " however, over 2000 voted that it matters at least a little to them, even if it isn't a deciding factor, they do have somewhat of a preference. over 600 voted it has stopped them from puchasing a game before. so gender DOES matter to them. even if it's sometimes. and over 300 between both gender preferences, voted that they refuse to play as the sex that is opposite of what they prefer to play as. So you see, if you estimate those 300 to 900 people, and multiply that on a global scale, where potentially hundreds of thousands to millions of players have a gender preference, it really is important for games to be designed for both genders, and let players play as either gender. It should be up to the player. So having both options is always an essential thing to have. modern/upcoming games/series that understand that include Pokemon, The Elder Scrolls Skyrim, Fire Emblem (well at least Fates), Playerunknown's Battlegrounds, Dark Souls, Bloodborne, Monster Hunter World, Code Vein, Naruto to Boruto Shinobi Striker, Dragon Ball Xenoverse, Xenoblade X, SAO Fatal Bullet, Dx2 Shin Megami Tensei Liberation, and others. games that let player choose their character's sex (and appearance options are a plus) get more profits than without that freedom. say if 100 players that have a gender preference would begin to be interested in a game if it provides the option to play as the gender that matches their preference, and if that game costs $50, that = $5000 more profits in the developers pocket. and obviously, there's a lot more profit to be made on the national and global scale when you factor in that the poll is just a small fraction from the total populations worldwide that have serious preference of gender they accept to play as. So yes it always matters, and people should not assume only the majority opinion matters. majority opinion that dont care, will not convince people that do care, to buy/play games that don't provide their needs and preferences. so companies harm themselves only catering and designing their game for only one gender and only one type of identity preference. EDIT: a new gender/sex preference poll www.gamefaqs.com/boards/691087-playstation-4/76127967

So you'd rather developers sacrifice time/money/story so you can choose the gender of your character? you can't have a good story with a create your own gary/mary sue which is why they do it for open world single player games, because backstory and character personality don't matter....but yea if you'd rather not have those then sure lets choose our genders in games

I didn't really want to drop my thoughts, because I feel like this will bite me, but oh well. I honestly think you're being a bit ridiculous. Character customization is nice in some games, but it's almost entirely dependent on the game. Some games have a specific character in the role of the protagonist for a reason. These games wouldn't have as strong of a narrative if it was just some random original character you made.
Character customization is something that is difficult to get right. If the game has a strong narrative focus, but you can make your character, this can result in your character becoming something you didn't plan for, because of how the narrative is designed, or alternatively you end up with a situation like White Knight Chronicles, where the playable character is customizable, yes, but technically isn't even the protagonist, and acts like an NPC mercenary the entire plot.
Character customization works best in games that have a loose narrative, where you have freedom to make your character and fill in the blanks of their characterization, without the game trying to shove in a backstory for YOUR character.
Sure, it's nice to have some level of customization, I like it when RPGs offer at least costumes, or let you change armors, or hell, look at Senran Kagura. But most of these games are designed like this for a reason. It honestly baffles me that 5,000 people voted that they don't care, and you take this as a bad thing? You shouldn't be thinking of this as "Well they don't care so why add a female character. You should be thinking of this as "Well they don't have a preference, so we can craft a character that best fits this story without worrying about losing so many sales."
I really hope everything you posted isn't some elaborate ruse because I sure don't wanna look dumb for actually trying to argue this.

oh dont be so cynical or whatever you call it. stop cowering to the status quo of games that strictly dictate the player's identity in the game, propagates a complacentt slave mentality and narrow minded pandering that does nothing for those that reject identity they don't accept and don't want forced upon them. things like gender choice and character selection are essential and always essential to a lot of people, more people than a lot of publishers/developers realize. though thankfully there are several developers that think outside the box (though some are clearly misguided. take Takahashi from Monolith Soft for example. they think character creation only makes sense in games with multiplayer included, which is stupid, it's like they never heard of The Elder Scrolls before, and other games that adopt what the first RPG, Dungeons & Dragons, established with encouraging players to decide and create their own personal ideal identity, appearance, even goals in the world. that openness and freedom is something that would improve all games, the opposite of that is a heartless dictatorship that breeds things like sexism, racism, and fanatical pandering to only one type of human being. So you'd rather developers sacrifice time/money/story so you can choose the gender of your character? you can't have a good story with a create your own gary/mary sue which is why they do it for open world single player games, because backstory and character personality don't matter....but yea if you'd rather not have those then sure lets choose our genders in game those that sacrifice time making their game only to one gender/demographic, are actually wasting their time on something that will be insignificant to those outside of that demographic. those that sacrifice money totally devoting their game to one gender/demographic, are wasting their money and won't receive as much money in return as they would have if they created the game with both genders in the plans and designs. stories are better when the player can identify and accept with the character they are playing as. just as most males are uncomfortable playing as female characters, most females are uncomfortable playing male characters. it's genetically, culturally, and naturally common sense that most humans prefer to align themselves with that which they can relate to. and expecting most people to accept playing a character that is opposite of what the players prefer, is inconsiderate and closed minded. "good story" is opinion based, and people that care about identity over story, can't even enjoy a story if they are not comfortable with the character they are playing in the first place. It's like expecting a particular gender to cross dress or play with doll that doesn't match their gender. it is unacceptable to people that have preference opposite of what developers chose. both genders matter, so games should be considerate to design their game and story for both genders. also the most personal, emotional, immersive and greatest stories have good character creation. a lot of successful companies, small budget and big budget have been doing it, and still providing both genders in their stories and games. if developers strictly just wanna make stories about a strictly designed and personality filled premade character, they might as well make books or movies, not videogames. of course, developers will do whatever regardless what others think, but they will still be rejected by consumers if the playable character(s) don't match the consumers preferences. of course pandering to the male demographic is an easy sell since that makes up the majority of the industry demographic, however, devs are missing out on much more money and fans not pandering to both genders, so devs harm their company and their game's appeal being biased about these things. and notice I didn't say ______ gender is better than ______ gender. I make it clear both genders are essential, and games that provide both options and do things right not only profit more and receive more respect, but also their game itself becomes more valuable to more types of people.

ah here is a new poll, and its great it confirms there is in fact a lot of preference to play as female protagonist. www.gamefaqs.com/boards/691087-playstation-4/76127967both preferences matter, and games are greater and relevant to more people with both options. so playable female protagonist option(s) are essential to a lot of people and companies benefit more profits not being biased. humans are made up of two sexes and both should be equally glorified and represented in lead role as well with good options.

You say that it's sexist that people don't really care about character customization. But... there's a more logical reason for that:
People just don't mind what gender they play as if the game is enjoyable.
And let's look at the poll you just posted on preferences. These results are to be expected, but not for the reasons you may think. Let's look at the question wording: "would you choose a male or female mc given the choice?" Since most gamers choose a mc that corresponds with their own gender, should character customization be in place, this 50-50 divide in the male/female categories of the poll makes sense.
While this seems to prove your point, let us look at the important part: "given the choice." This means that these results are only applicable within games with customization or at least an option. "But wait!" you may cry. "Wouldn't they desire their preferred gender in games without this option, then?"
That's where the first poll comes in.
An overwhelming majority doesn't mind the player character's gender, so even if they have a preferred gender in customization, they don't mind sticking with a predetermined option. Furthermore, the sections that mentioned "not buying a game because of the lack of a certain option"? In total, they only make up roughly 5 PERCENT of the total votes. Therefore, even if developers don't have an option, you're making a mountain out of a molehill; the so-called "exclusion of demographics" applies to only 5 percent of potential customers (and that's being generous, since you chop off a chunk of that percentage if you satisfy the part of this minority that wants a male protagonist or female protagonist).
And that, my friend, is my statistical analysis of this situation, using the evidence you yourself used to make this argument.
