I just bought this game, along with Attack on Titan 2 the other day. I have to say, I'm frustrated with Shinobi Striker, because I had to wait for nearly 15 to 18 hours for an update. I did go in without waiting and got a good look at the game. While visually gorgeous, the customization is lacking right from the get-go, but that's a minor nitpick, because it usually starts that way for a game with character customization. Going into the various VR Missions, the combat system is different from the Storms which I had mostly played before this one. It's fairly good, and kind of frustrating, partially do to not really getting into practice with the four combat types in the game, Attack, Heal, Defense, and Ranged, which are all pretty self-explanatory. I think Attack and Defense works best for me.
I quickly discovered the camera can sometimes be your worst enemy, other than the enemies in the game itself. When I'm focusing on bashing a baddie, another comes up and gets me, and there's so many enemies I forget to block or sometimes use my ninja techniques because I'm panicking while rapidly losing health, and I have no idea what's going to happen next. I don't like to be so overwhelmed while playing a game, because it ruins the experience. There's one mission where that's a major issue: the one where I'm supposed to defend a gate to make sure enemies don't get through to the village. I get knocked down, only to struggle to get back up because the enemies won't relent on the attacks. And this is on the solo missions. I haven't even unlocked the other stuff yet.
Unlocking more clothes, earning money, and leveling up is a chore. I have play through the missions in order to get clothes to put on my character.
Oh, and the best part about this game? The tournament the characters have been going on about, the game mode the trailers and footage hyped us up for? It's online only, and as far as I know, there's no real story either. I can only to the VR Missions because I don't have PlayStation Plus, so I can't go online and play with the other players, which the game actively wants me to do.
I waited for hours for this bullshit?! That was a wasted opportunity for something interesting. Didn't the developers for the game stop and think that the tournament mode didn't have be online exclusive and could have been an actual single player/story mode while VR Missions could be a quick and easy way to help level up your character and learn new skills from an in-series character (who you choose as your Master for learn said skills), and Online Mode could be a separate thing all together?
With that said, for anyone else who bought Shinobi Striker... fun gameplay and good graphics aside, was it worth buying? In my experience, it probably wasn't. AOT 2 offered a better experience, thanks to having an actual story mode, more detailed character customization, somewhat more improved game mechanics from the original, the ability to interact and bond with the other characters, and of course, the ability to go online at your leisure, and none of it made me suffer the BS Striker left me with. I'm already on the second chapter of AOT 2, while I'm stuck with measly (and frustrating) side missions in Striker, with almost no true progression in sight. For this tragic mistake, I may consider Naruto to Boruto: Shinobi Striker a fail.
