character creation in general would be a plus too. FFXVI is a chance for Square Enix to break out of their sexist and racist history of excluding female lead option in the majority of their core Final Fantasy games as well as the self inflicted racism they have against their own race, not dedicating Final Fantasy RPG to asian/japanese dominant themed world when FF1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,12,13,15 are all almost entirely pandering to glorifying white demographic.
Western devs naturally mostly glorify whites, while most asian companies glorify white/westerners, is really wrong and lopsided to maintain the global white worship going on the industry for the most part. like after so many games, Final Fantasy could produce a japanese/asian themed world, which would be really interesting instead of the blur that is the tropey western sci if or in this case another western/european medieval mix. even Bioware broke out of their usual mold and dedicated an asian themed RPG (Jade Empire).
and Final Fantasy still has no true pure Japanese/asian lead protagonist.
blonde hair, blue eyes, and even if they have dark hair, they clearly have caucasian/typical westerner genetics, its plain as day to any realist out there.
meanwhile, Square Enix might be keeping female roles underneath the heel of a male lead again,
unless this is like FFXIV where the marketing material promotes a default male lead, but the actual FFXVI game lets players change the lead into a female character with appearance and race of the player's choosing, this cannot be excused from the natural racism and sexist labels that it deserves should it limit the protagonist to the type which oversaturates the series and industry overall.
ne that values fairness and respects all races and sexes of humans equally would have the empathy to understand and agree that having two male leads back to back is not healthy for any series. there is so much potential to design female leads that are as good or better than the protagonists of the past.
I heard FFXVI is being devloped by FFXIV team or a part of them or something, however developers in general can be clueless with some things. namely the culture of character creation in japanese games. Some developers think character creation "only makes sense" if the game has a multiplayer component, which is one of the stupidest kinds of logic there is. It's like any devs that believes "single player = preset protagonist with no alternatives. multiplayer = character creation" really haven't heard of The Elder Scrolls series before, or Dungeons & Dragons for that matter, which can be played solo.
some developers adopt statistical and RNG traditions of RPGs yet fail to understand the values of player freedom of identity and designing stories that are adaptable for any type of protagonist. FFXI and FFXIV are examples of great stories and interactions that support character creation as well. its just a matter of how things are worded and events adapted. but it doesnt have to be an mmorpg to support a fully creatable protagonist.
so yea not expecting anything from Square Enix with their inconsiderate reputation. though Xenoblade developer is an example how clueless some devs are, they have a brilliant character creation system in Xenoblade X, but then go back to the shonen preset trope in Xenoblade 2. also From Software, they have character creation for soulsborne games, but a preset protagonist in Sekiro due to it being a single player only game (really stupid on their part leaving out character creation)
some people only care about FFXVI's story and gameplay if its any good, but this is a new generation. standards of game design should rise and expand beyond exclusively pandering to one specific demographic. instead of designing a game like a dictator, developers should make the game adaptable for both male and female protagonists of various races like FFXI and FFXIV support. it would not diminish the equality of the gameplay nor story, as Shadowbringers is one of the evidence this generation that male and female character creation, multiple playable races and great storytelling can coexist and make the game more fun than if it was just limited to "white dude is the lead hero" trope that only feeds the rampant sexism and racism going on in the real world.
