So the first data of Senran Kagura 2 sales are coming out in Japan. Right now at 40% sell through of initial shipment. Should have Famitsu figures next week to get clearer picture.
My question is, what do sales mean for the series?
Right now I sense Senran Kagura itself is safe even if an entry does well or not. The issue is what future entries may be like and on what platforms.
Is SK2 critical for the series being on 3DS in the future? If it falls short of Shinovi Versus and Estival Versus outsells it will the series go fully Vita? Or would SK3 more likely be multi platform with 3DS and PSV versions? Thoughts?

I'm sure it will sell more than Burst. It is a sequel and from what I've seen, a really good sequel. I'm still looking forward to hearing some news regarding Estival Versus. Maybe, we'll get some info in a Dengeki Playstation issue or during TGS.

I guess it is wise for maql to release the game both on Vita and 3ds. Being different from other markets, Japanese markets is dominated by handhelds. 3ds sold 16 million and vita sold 3 million.
I guess the sales in wk1 of Senran 2 might be around 0.1 mil.
The sales of otaku games tend to be stable on different platforms. When Vita only sell around 2 million, Senran SV can sell 0.15 mil in wk1.
On 3ds the developing cost would be much cheaper because of the low resolution, and the high coverage is attractive for developers. More importantly, Senran got popular first on 3ds, so there is no need to focus on Vita at all lol.
Personally I like how marvelous keep on implementing their new ideas by releasing interesting new games every year. As you know these days in Japan those pay-to-win social/mobage/gree games are extremely popular and earns lots of money. Capcom, square enix, namco etc. all put efforts on those games just to make money. I really don't regard those pay-to-win ones genuine games at all as it is not interesting at all, pay-to-win happens enough in real life lol it is ridiculous to appear in games. In all, I respect those companies still put effort to develop traditional games every year, hope they can earn enough money to keep developing new interesting titles. XD

I can agree with that, as long as the games are fun with a pretty good story, if there is one for said game of course. lol

Hoping it will sell well enough at any rate. It would be sad if there wasn't another game on 3DS, given the series existed because of the 3D effect in the first place.
As mentioned in this thread already that's unlikely though. Given how close the visual quality is between SV and SK2 (and the lighting and animation are now better in SK2) development costs are probably equal for this sort of game across both platforms, but I'd imagine a lot of the extra visual touches introduced in SK2 will make it over to Estival Versus, and Dekamori SK was a pretty blatant reuse of assets (nearly every part of that game's visual assets, bar the actual food and cooking was reused from SV).

Looking around the shops since thursday and dear oh dear, full shelves of DX packs and regulars, somes shops making massive posters and even having pretty girls stand and try and sell you a copy, breaks my heart because SV is one of my all time fav games.....got to spell the end of the 3DS line (which I worried would happen if they made another crappy game for this console) ta-ta jankey buggy boring chore Nintendo tripe Hello glorious Playstation goodness, Estival VS will re-light the fires I can assure you. Generally speaking 3DS is for kids and VITA is for otakus (I too have both before you say it) and we all know who buys SK stuff. SK2 was in my opinion a step backwards and seems the reception supports this.

SK2 happened because Takaaki stated that he's gonna make the sequel for the 3DS. I'm guessing no more SK on 3DS after this. Not until he bring that up again. Can't wait to see the rankings.

Come on, I respect your opinions, but I feel what you say is pointless.
I don't know how long you've spent on SV, I played it for half a year and got over 100k BP in vs human online battles.
Indeed SV is an interesting game, it is not so good as some of you may claim, as for offline modes, the biggest problem is most of the stages end in less than 3 min, and inochi kakei is just braindeadly broken; as for the online battle the balance is like shit and marvlous just leave it as it is.
Other downgrades in SV include, no unique motion of shinobi tenshin, no unique moveset in changing room, the uniform and senran mode are combined, everyone only has 1 theme instead of two, simplified commandlist...
Some of the issues may not be your concern, lol
My point is that no game is perfect, "Without love, it cannot be seen." If your preference over graphics dominated your thoughts, everyting you see is problem lol

Those problems are pretty minor imo. That's not gonna affect my thoughts on SV. Also, i'm sure any character can beat anyone, depending on how you use said character. I always believe that the whole tiers thing is really stupid.

Those problems are pretty minor imo. That's not gonna affect my thoughts on SV. Yeah it is still quite a good game overall or it is impossible for me to play it for 6 month without any interest to play other games, my point is that no game is perfect lol. Imo the biggest problem is the online balance issues, hope it can be patched in the english version. If they do it I don't mind buying it again on my Asia account. The problem is that too many characters have low risk and high benefit moves which are almost impossible to get punished, if they spam those moves on and on the battle is boring as hell, unfortunately lots of people do it online. When playing 2vs2 battles, the situation is much better, though the weak characters are still too far away from the strong ones.
