I'd like to apologize for what I wrote earlier. I'm in a bit of stressful situation at work coming back from vacation.. I shouldnt have done that and I regret it.
I have to say though, Poog, I felt like you set up the Yumi argument unintentionally in your OP. It's funny cause Yumi is probably not even in my top 10 of favorite characters. I looked in the thread for the first time and I CTRL+F "Yumi" and she's getting 20+ hits per page. Forgetting all the new wave cards and art she receives [that's for the Japanese fanbase exclusively and should not matter to anyone in the west unless they play new wave or order from pre-order stores (like me)] there really isnt any Yumi saturation in the games. She received the same role as all four leaders in SV (Asuka and Homura actually received more) and the same role as everyone in Dekamori. Senran Kagura 2 had no Yumi in it at all (and still had the problem of dumbing characters like Katsuragi and Homura down). In EV she received a main character role because she's a main character and they essentially made her the pair off with Asuka officially. And she's one in a game of 25+ characters. I'm actually impressed now how far they were able to go with a lot of characters with a lot of dead weight coming from the cast. For all intents and purposes as of now, Yumi essentially the "Ryu". It's the fault of character bloating that causes Homura to refuse Asuka from doing missions as a ninja or just talking about meat, or Katsuragi just now realizing a ninja kills people even though she did it in a previous game and just talking about boobs. If anything is going to improve this, it's to just cut the number of characters down.
Please Poog just say you're going to speak for this specific thread and not more than the scope of that.
Sorry about my sour grapes earlier but it kind of summarizes the thread.

Sorry about my sour grapes earlier but it kind of summarizes the thread. It's not really about Yumi's role in the game as much as it is about all the marketing she receives. People aren't wrong in calling it "Wolverine Publicity", but of course Yumi doesn't seem to have that big of an impact on the series if you choose to ignore all the cards and art she receives. Also I never got what the big deal with Homura "refusing Asuka from doing missions as a ninja"... I think you're taking the situation as a whole outside of context. In SK2, Homura didn't want Asuka to stop her mission, she just wanted her to think if blindly following the orders was the right thing to do... and I think that was a great plot point, because even though ninjas actually DO blindly follow orders, it's a good thing to try and give Asuka, whose great part of her character revolved around her dream to be a shinobi, some doubts about her duty. So I don't really think Homura was dumbed down in SK2. Hell, I think her role was equal if not greater to Asuka's, after all her and the rest of the Crimson Squad were personally involved because they wanted to stop Dōgen.

Mentioning Yumi that often is not the result of wanting to get rid of her but to not forget that there're other characters, and where the story was before it turned into "Yumi this, Yumi that". No one wants to get rid of her, but the series isn't all about Yumi, so balance the importance of the other, even forgotten characters. For dealing with nearly hundred different characters, it's not the right balance to most people. Yumi is just the number one choice to mention since she's on top of popularity, and other people would love to see the cast in a balanced state, not to put one over the other, and this isn't only for Yumi. That's why it won't be mentioned with Yumi but with giving each girl some attention as they're part of the series, even the main characters. That a lot of people are sick of seeing Yumi everywhere might be true, but you can't address it like that. Even when the Japanese market might be more important than the western market, it's not wrong to address that issue in a neutral way without pointing fingers on certain characters.

What happens when you put 30+ characters in a game? Who's going to get focus? The main character. And the most popular one at that. Because unless you're actually cutting characters, that's the right thing to do. And please tell me when the story turned into "Yumi this, Yumi that". Because EV was really the only role where she was more featured than Asuka and Homura. Even then she still received similar attention to Miyabi and Ryouna and the festival girls. The Yumi complaint seems like sour grapes based on nothing but that fact that she gets more art which is in high demand.

The Yumi complaint seems like sour grapes based on nothing but that fact that she gets more art which is in high demand. She's simply the number one point to mention when it goes for overhyped girls in SK. She's not alone with that. I don't have anything against Yumi, but there's a point where it gets boring to see her as the selling point of SK, among a few others. Of course, it boosts the sales and satisfies the masses, but that doesn't mean everything swims on that wave. ^^ It was in EV, went over to NW, and also is easy to notice on merchandise. Again, as you see, people would prefer to see other, less famous characters to receive more attention, somewhat shifting the balance a bit into the favor of less popular characters. It wouldn't hurt the popularity of Yumi, Ikaruka, Leo, and a few others on top of the ladder. Might be difficult to balance with that high amount of girls, but you can't expect everyone to love what Japan loves the most, just to balance it "right" is a big issue with nearly hundred girls. They're the main focus without a question, but doesn't mean we could address it in a neutral way. After all, the open letter is there to show our interest. You have to deal with the fact that the western world might not share the same opinion as Japan. If it would, it'd be even more boring.

Merchandise and New Wave? That's completely all Japan. I participated in one of the polls (actually using money) for new wave and voted for Ushimaru. She didnt even crack the top 10 of new wave exclusive characters. I dont even know if she hit the top 20. She might have. That goes to show how popular Yumi is. Merchandise and new wave are completely Japanese things. All that art you see? Completely for the Japanese. Complaining about that just comes off as self-centered. Hell, people need to be more happy that Marvelous EU threw out their own poll and just decided that katsuragi can be on a piece of merch. Asuka and Homura were "overhyped" in SV. That's fine they were main characters. Yumi's a main character. If you're plugging 25+ characters in a game, she deserves to be "overhyped". Because if everyone's in the game, then close to nobody is. Her role in EV was a stock main character role. That's it. I'd like to know how she's "overhyped" too. She's the granddaughter of a really good ninja who is very clear about her role and wants to do so. That's it. She beat a weakened Jasmine. Oh no the sky is falling. All this complaining that characters like Katsuragi acting like an idiot are dancing around the fact that there are way too many characters in a single game. Yeah, it's cool to think that these games can be 50 hours long with time spread out evenly but it's not going to happen. "Make other characters receive focus" is only going to happen if you cut other ones.

Most of EV's story wasn't even about Yumi. It was, primarily, a Hebijo story first and foremost. And teasers for a big storyline in the future actually highlight the Mikagura sisters and Kagura, not Yumi. The problem with the Yumi-centric marketing is that it doesn't reflect the in-game content, which is essential for good marketing. She's not the main character because the focus in the story isn't on her. The actual main characters in EV were Ryobi and Ryona. People not being that big on Yumi really isn't that big a problem. I really don't see the issue.

And it did that. It was more about them than Yumi. But Yumi was much more important in there than Miyabi or the other two. EV's story was about coming to term with dead relatives and Yumi was nervous about how she should go about being a ninja after what happened in SV and the team reconciling with Kurokage. Ryoubi and Ryouna were featured a lot because Ryouki was put into the game and she's a cute girl as opposed to an old man. Pleas source me on this on the crimson squad's campaign being canon Looming storylines for the future were just yoma and doing ninja things in the future. The sisters can meet Kagura again in PBS. It's not like that should be it's own game. "The problem with the Yumi-centric marketing is that it doesn't reflect the in-game content, which is essential for good marketing." Yumi was pretty prominentely featured in EV. Maybe not as much as Ryoubi and Ryouna but she was prominent. I dont know what to tell you because EV did very well for itself in Japan and the best it's been in the west. I'm trying to determine what the marketing for EV you're referring too. Niche games nearly dont have great marketing. They sell a lot through word of mouth through typical famitsu articles of which werent about Yumi except for the one article that introduced her and her team. EV had an additional OVA which is ok but compares nothing like what an anime can do for sales. Ryouki wasnt in the OVA so I dont know what making the POV of Ryouna and Ryoubi would do since the OVA was just goofy ecchi stuff. Did you want an OVA of Katsuragi talking about boobs in swimsuits? Or Asuka making phallic jokes using futomaki? Did you want Homura complaining about she's hungry all the time and they're poor for the whole 25 minutes? Daidouji being unable to do math? There are also videos that preview the game, of which Asuka's VA (why is that I wonder?) does a lot with Yumi's for PBS. As for store bonuses (where you see all the Yumi and Yomi art). They are specifically requested and worked between the store and marvelous. The types of bonuses (tapestries, acrylic folders) and characters are decided. And those arent really marketing. And I'm using a third party to actually get one, where a ton of people here will not import or just do so from amiami because they have an import site. And even they have the two popular not-Yumis as a bonus over someone random. PBS is being advertised as nothing but a pat on the back 5th anniversary goofy water game. Takaki wanted it.

It was a Hebijo story. Miyabi meeting her deceased mother was actually a big part of it. Yumi also didn't really have that big a presence. Her story was a very small thing on the side. The main story was about Hebijo. I would like to know how that makes her a main character. I'm sure if you look around, you'll find credible evidence that the Crimson Squad's ending was originally supposed to be canon. Estival Versus hinted at a big storyline focusing on the Mikagura sisters and Kagura, so, yeah, they should have a big story about that because they hinted at it. It was in the campaign. Pretty hard to miss if you look for it. Just because it can just be a small thing in PBS doesn't mean it should be. It should be a significant event because of what it would mean for those characters going forward. I'm pretty sure if you look for hints about future stories, you will find specific events teasing at possible storylines. The franchise's storylines aren't really that isolated. They have been hinting at things that can happen for a while. There's foreshadowing.

Just a friendly reminder that the purpose of the thread was to get feedback for the letter, not to debate. Right. Apologies. I'll drop the debate here. It's extremely important to weed out actual criticism to complaining about Yumi. I'll message you about it but the Yumi criticism holds very little water. "Yumi is on too much stuff but keep all the characters in" is something that will get laughed at. It's big headed and arrogant. If you want to complain that your favorite character is getting a stupid quirk, fine. But dont make it so that "Yumi" doesnt pop up a million times when someone does a word search. People do realize Asuka was on the cover for EV right? She has 0 personal storyline in that game other than "this is my grandma".

I primarily bring her up because, you're right story-wise for EV, but merch, promo stuff, etc, its all very Yumi centric. Even when it came to Jasmine being taken down, who was the one to finish her? Stuff like that. You start the game as Yumi, theres a lot more Yumi than others. That said, I can respect your opinions for sure. Tbh Estival even made me like Yumi just a wee bit more 'cause she relaxed a bit. But this really wasn't brought on by the people of this thread, we have it in our FB group and page, we see it on tumblr, 4chan threads, etc. Otherwise I probably wouldn't have bothered with this in the first place.

This series has become my favorite video game franchise ever. The story the characters, it all truly inspired me day in and out. I know it'll never happen but if I could ever offer the brilliant creator my superteam to use. I think my life would truly be complete. Senran Kagura Superteam Versus! I like I said know it's impossible. But Senran Kagura. It is the superteam already in a way. The great storytelling with brilliant comedy and amazing characters! Well if anyone has read my superteam comics on DA? You'd probably see the similarities. Even though I'll never see it happen. This franchise already feels as though I have in a way. But every time I play estival versus....I... Get this feeling...This passion inside this happiness that makes me wish that the superteam could interact with the Senran Kagura cast. Celena meeting Yumi,Homura meeting Laura, Zoe and Haruka making twisted serums and medicines....If there were even one cameo... I'd be the most Honored man to ever exist. As for changes? Well an offline single player accessible versus mode would certainly be fun. That and a color wheel for hair especially would be nice.
Oh and if anyone wants to see how serious I am about how similar these characters I've been thinking up since I was 5 are to the Senran Kagura girls? I'm MEGAF1SH on Deviantart.

Regarding your guys' whole Yumi crusade, I offer this as my own input, for whatever it's worth. That aside, I've got two main ones I think. 1. Considering there is such a following for them in at least portions of the Western fanbase, if it is at all possible, I think it might be beneficial if Takaki/Marvelous were to consider porting the 3DS titles to PS4/Steam, with either a graphical overhaul and extra content or at a low price point. Players who haven't been exposed to these games would be able to see parts of the series they've never been able to, while having most of the games in the same place would help with finding out just what the fanbase likes going forward as opposed to keeping things splintered. 2. Having such a large cast isn't a bad thing, but how it's handled could use some work. Everyone has their favorites. I think Estival Versus' and Bon Appetit's methods of providing different ways to purchase the game based on who you wanted to play as and post-release content are some steps in the right direction. If a big, big Senran Kagura game was made with a smaller cast in the future, for example, not only would it not need to include the entire cast, but there's no reason its life couldn't be extended through added additional characters and story content post-release. If a game goes by where certain characters aren't in it, a cool downloadable scenario could be added just for that character to show what they were up to while the main game was going on. Alternatively, smaller, episodic games could also be made to work by some creative reuse of existing assets, I feel. (Translation: Ikaruga and Katsuragi can go on cool adventures after they graduate and still be playable without the "foundation" of the series getting shaken up too much this way!) And that's all I got, I think. Oh, one more, actually, but not so much for me. 3. People like their limited editions here too. There are companies here that have partnered up with other localization teams and developers to help provide physical releases and limited editions of games they themselves didn't localize when games otherwise wouldn't have received such a treatment. Considering how many fans enjoy these types of things, and considering how the limited editions the series has received outside of Japan have varied in quality (to say the least), I would really consider looking into this for future titles so the fans who want these goods can show their support.
