So, I have long debated on getting a PSP, then the Vita came out I debated between the two. Now, Sony has Vita TV to throw another option in the mix. Does anyone have advice for various options and advantages and disadvantages of each? I do appreciate it as honestly not sure which versions of various products and what I can do on each anymore. Least I know the PlayStation 4is easy decision to get.

Least I know the PlayStation 4is easy decision to get. Although im not a fan of the hand held I would say go with the vita itself for two main reasons: 1. From the look of it you use a ps3 control so you lose some VITA features and this could limit your games. (You won't be able to harass Homura in SV ) (Wipeout for example only has a touch screen menu) 2. Having the VITA on your TV to me makes it the same as a PS3 & PS4 meaning I at least would constantly judge it to the others which are for obvious reason far superior and powerful, the main point of the VITA is the option of where to play. Plus games will made towards the VITA and this just supports said games so they wont feel right. The VITA is good once you've got a better feel for it and realize that it is not a portable ps3. Where as the VITA TV to me would feel like a PS2.5 .

Yeah, I was wondering how Dual Shock 3 and Dual Shock 4 would work. DS4 has that touch pad thing...
I am leaning to regular ol' Vita as the revision one seems to be a cheaper version in quality, but only $10 less.
Maybe holiday sales to look out for.

If you don't mind going digital for PSP games and shelling out a little extra, go with the Vita. It's portable and has the touchscreen and touchpad, necessary for some games. You can't play multiplayer for PS1 games, if you want that sort of thing. I haven't noticed this myself, but some say that PSP games look worse on the Vita. Could be the OLED screen or something. I dunno. If you don't care for touch control games and you want it on a bigger screen, go for the Vita TV. If you get both the Vita and the Vita TV, you pretty much get full functionality for the system while being on a big screen. Play PS1 games with your friends and stuff. However, getting a Vita means you would be missing out on exclusive UMD games( www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=465182 ), but the library of PSP games on PSN is not bad at all. I don't really see the pluses for streaming a PS4 on the Vita TV....maybe if you're in another room? If it's for the controller, why not just plug it straight into TV and forget the middle man. Either way, the option's there. PSP...I wouldn't recommend it because the Vita has a second stick and control mapping, but it is necessary if you absolutely have to play those exclusive UMD games.

Wow. Thank you for that well thought out response. The Vita on TV could be nice, but losing certain games and functionality is a big hit for it to me. Of course, they also showed off a 64GB card....for $100!

The trailer for the Vita TV shows the DS4 controller working with it for PS4 remote play.
Bear in mind that the PS4 itself won't be out in Japan until next February. Since there are no DS4s available until then, the DS3 you get in the bundle deal offered here is possibly intended as a stopgap measure, since it still works for games that have no touch feature use.
However, depending on the timing of the Vita TV's release in North America (assuming, of course, that there is to be one), the DS4 (and PS4) might already be out over here by the time it surfaces. So all you'd need is to get the Vita TV unit by itself, unless SCEA decides to do a new bundle with a DS4 included or something.
(Even in Japan, there will still be a standalone release for the Vita TV, so you don't have to get the bundle with the DS3 if you don't want to.)
Although, if a game makes use of both the front and back touch surfaces on the Vita, I'm not sure how the DS4 would account for that, if it can at all.

Okay, lets see if I can help. If you get the PSP, you'll be able to play only PSP and PS1 games and of course no PS Vita games.
If you get the PS Vita portable, you'll be able to play PSP, PS1, and PS Vita games, and you can take it anywhere you want. Not to mention, it has a filter that sharpens the visuals of both PS1 and PSP games last I've checked.
If you get the PS Vita console, you'll be able to play PSP, and PS1, and SOME PS Vita games that doesn't use the touchscreen. I'm not sure if the PS Vita TV will have the filter like the portable version. (So no Shinovi Versus unless Sony is going to do something to allow us to play games that uses the touchscreen feature.)
As for the Memory Spaces, don't worry too much about it. You can always take it out of your memory card and store it on you computer for safe keeping, saving up a lot of spaces. Either way, the choice is yours.

Shinovi Versus is already on the list of games which are supported by the Vita TV, the DS3 control issues notwithstanding. (Exactly how the touch aspects are handled on a DS4 remains to be seen.)

If anyone cares about my opinions continue reading....
The PSP, PSP 3000 is still.....in my opinion at least still a viable option due to PSP Games "NOT" in digital formatted are some of the better games on the console like Crisis Core, Birth By Sleep, and Type-0 to name a few. Also it being fairly cheap and finding UMD's even cheaper since it's a dead medium...makes obtaining a library of great games easier than going the digital route. I.e. getting FF1 and God Eater Burst for less than $10 each....both great titles imo, also you have the option for Digital games(BRS:The game for example) since PSP memory sticks are FAR cheaper than PSVita ones....as you can buy ScanDisk ones that work just fine.
I still have my PSP 3000 and still play it often because my group of friends still play God Eater and Phantasy Star P2 along with your occasional Dissida 012. We're still looking forward to PSP games....hahaha
Vita and Vita TV imo are still solid Ideas too, Me personally....I'm waiting to see about getting that God Eater 2 bundle for the Vita 2000 and importing cost. The PSVita does have a wide range of games from both PSOne and PSP titles, but as I explained above, you'll have to most likely pay full MSRP for each digital title...something a cheap gamer like me would like to avoid doing if possible. Which is why I think if you want a Vita, buy it for Vita games and if possible get them while they are on sale or go for super uber special editions....there is no in-between...lulz.
Vita TV imo seems to appeal to a specific demographic, I personally find it pointless....making a cheaper console ver. of a handheld isn't something I would want. The point of the handheld is to play it on the go, and the Vita having remote play with the PS4 is something that is more or less a incentive to have one if you plan on buying a PS4 in the long run anyways, it gives you more options and games to play. The Vita TV imo is target to people who want to buy a device that can stream netflix without having to buy a high dollar console just to do that, or buy a set-top box which are usually more expensive than the Vita TV. But that is just my opinion.
Ultimately it depends on how much money you want to spend and what games you want to play...for me...I have both PSP 3000 and a first gen PS Vita...which I will get rid of soon to get a PSV 2000. The PSP was bought a while ago and got it with a bundle, It's went through some rough times but I have a large library of games for it...that continue to grow. I have a 32GB Memory stick with tons of games and Music and it's my main travel companion next to the 3DS.
My Vita doesn't get alot of play due to the nature of it not having alot of games and "baby the console" mentality I have with the thing...so I don't feel all the good about bringing it everywhere with me like I do with the PSP/3DS. There is that and the amount of games on it is very shallow imo...and even though I have my Digital PSP games that I can potentially play...my 16GB card needs all the space it can get with all the apps and such on the handled...so it's more or less a balancing act in my case in which I usually opt-out to the PSP or 3DS unless I want to play Shinovi Versus or Nep PP.
anyways, sorry if it's not the most persuasive argument but it's something.

vita tv has a great price and is targeted at the Japanese market. the up side to this is even if it fails Nintendo won't do a 3ds wiiu version in fear of looking like they copied. I think Sony completely gave up on trying to compete with Nintendo(Nintendo is struggling trying to sell the Wii U...) on that front so it's why the turned the Vita into a set-top box-like device. The handheld just got a upgrade that is cool for people who are still on the fence about getting a vita, the universal(now) pricecut and better library of games should net some sales for both the handheld and the TV console variant. The Vita TV as I said before is for a specific demographic, generally I think it's for the more casual or non-gamer than for someone like me who is a avid gamer as I stated. Reason behind that is because the Vita TV is more or less a affordable way for people to enjoy things like Netflix, Hulu and other streaming services that PSN offers without having buy a normal set-top box from Mac or where ever. In my opinion though, the market for this device is going to be very niche because Smart TV's are on the rise and there are already so many devices that does what the Vita TV does for not too much more money. To me to get the most out of the Vita TV, the household needs a PS4...and generally why would you want this thing when you have a PS4 and a Vita handheld? The only logical explanation I could come up with is for it to be used in your living room or extra room where you PS4 isn't present and people can enjoy using it for Netflix. <...Gift for my Mom essentially since she has Netflix and Hulu and watches shows frequently on them...

I live in japan and japanese are too lazy to game on console anymore because of work and other things. if they could just use there handheld on the TV and off they would. The price keeps it always in the sweet spot and its a stand one and does not need its on content so Sony could just make a few and put them in there section in stores with out really taking much room. Basiclly is the 2DS answer from Sony in japan since nintendo does not need 2DS in japan. But Sony needs something to get people on board the Vita train some how since PS4 will be designed around it. We will have to just see how they both play our in the regions they are targeted for.

As for the Memory Spaces, don't worry too much about it. You can always take it out of your memory card and store it on you computer for safe keeping, saving up a lot of spaces. Either way, the choice is yours. That is actually really interesting. I'd have to weight how many games and save files on a card and how cumbersome swapping them on my PC would be. Given Sony's insane pricing model could save me a bit of money going that way.
